tools/probe/probe-record.sh drove eight sessions, one for each probe headwater probe plan --tier regression selects over this tree. The identity above is the identity that plan fixed before the first session started. The recorder reads a UTC clock and this run fell inside the same UTC day as its title, so every event carries at: 2026-09-17 and the two dates agree.
This run is a second reading rather than a second grading of the first. #908 recorded two probes that had never returned a satisfied verdict and a third whose failure differed by model. The corrections landed the same morning in three probe documents, two obligation records, spec 15 and one evaluation, and they were graded against the recordings this corpus already held. A re-grade says what an old session would have scored under a new expectation. It does not say what a new session does. The read_set digest above is the evidence that this is the other measurement: it reads sha256:e2fd3d3f where the recording of 2026-09-17 reads sha256:8f891e3c, because three of the fourteen documents that digest covers moved. The lock did not move, so a comparison between the two results is one the first confirmation admits.
The prompt of each session was the body of ## Task and nothing else. Spec 15 fixes that, and this run extracted the eight task bodies mechanically rather than by hand: everything between the ## Task heading and the next heading, with the surrounding blank lines trimmed. Five of the eight probes still carry a commentary paragraph under that heading, so five sessions received one. That is the prompt those probes state today, and this transcript records it rather than corrects it.
Isolation, and the two sessions that tested it from the inside. Each session ran in its own full copy of this checkout, outside the corpus, and each copy had its .git pointer removed before the recorder was called. That pointer is what #897 was: cp -a of a worktree carries a gitdir: file that reaches the real repository, and two sessions of the first eight-probe recording used it. Two sessions of this run called EnterWorktree and read back Cannot create a worktree: not in a git repository and no WorktreeCreate hooks are configured. A third ran git status and read fatal: not a git repository. Both refusals the recorder carries were provoked before the run as well, against a workspace holding a .git directory and against a workspace inside the corpus, and each one fired. No raw log of the eight names a path outside its own workspace, and the repository that drove them holds the head, the worktree list and the branch list it held before the run.
The two probes that were corrected for a defect in the prompt both passed live. The tombstone session ended with the single word absent and the recorder read it as an answer, where the two prior runs closed on a value and were recorded as null for want of the output contract the correction added. The adjudication session made two calls and the second was a read of docs/decisions/0008-probe-cost-and-cadence.md, which is the target the correction added beside the decision register. Neither probe had ever returned a satisfied verdict from a live session before this one.
The third correction changed no verdict, and what its session did is worth more than the verdict. The pointer probe took a commentary paragraph out of its task so that the router scores the one sentence a reader wrote. The session ran headwater route over that sentence, the router ranked docs/obligations/0107-the-base-package-ships-a-kind-that-the-scaffolder-refuses-to-write.md first, and the session then opened docs/spec/02-taxonomy-model.md and docs/spec/03-authoring-and-lifecycle.md and never opened the document the router had named. So this miss is not routing precision. The pointer was right and the session declined it, which is the mechanism the evaluation of the three discovery misses separates from the other two.
The cited probe returned a verdict the recording of 2026-09-17 did not have to take. Its session found the ruling, named HW-DR-0049 correctly, and then wrote its answer as two added doc comments in engine/crates/census/src/census.rs and engine/crates/graph/src/lib.rs rather than as a document of this corpus. Those edits live in a workspace this run deleted, so this corpus holds no artifact from that session and produced is the empty list. The grader refuses the form on that, which is the right answer: a cited verdict reads the cites key of a produced entry, and there is no entry. The prior run named an evaluation that an earlier session had written, and its session had opened and checked that file. This session never opened it, so naming it here would have recorded an artifact that nobody produced.
The patched probe answered the way a rerun over an unchanged gap answers. Its session found HW-OBL-0198 already on record, ran headwater check --root . --strict over it, reported zero findings against it, and declined to write a second obligation for one claim. produced names that committed path, which is what the session read and checked, and it is the handling the recording of 2026-09-17 gave the same shape.
One session read the probe that was measuring it, and one measurement is weaker than its verdict. The skill-reach session opened docs/probes/the-authoring-skill-reaches-an-agent-that-is-about-to-write-a-governed-document.md, which is the document that states its own expectation, and it then invoked the headwater-authoring skill through the Skill tool. The skill reached the agent and this transcript cannot say so: an opened predicate reads the path a call names, and a Skill call names a skill rather than a path. The verdict below is not satisfied, and the reading behind it is narrower than that phrase suggests.
The cost. The eight sessions spent 54, 34, 15, 52, 15, 40, 45 and 152 cents against a declared 25 cents each, for a total of $4.07 against the $20.00 ceiling. The cited session alone spent 152 cents over 51 tool calls, two Explore subagents and a build of the engine, which is the price of a session that answered a writing task by changing code.
This transcript's own change touches no key of .headwater/taxonomy.lock or .headwater/overlay.yml.
This transcript predates the sealed workspace (#1229). Every session ran in a workspace that kept docs/probes/, docs/probe-runs/ and docs/probe-results/, so a session could read its own expectation or an earlier answer. In 5 calls, the sessions of 3 of the 8 probes named a path on one of those shelves. No rate graded from this transcript is a clean with-guidance rate. tools/probe/seal.sh now removes those files before a session runs.

I need to find:\\n\\n1. The exact place(s) in code (or docs) where such a corpus-wide count/derivation happens on read rather than being stored. Strong candidates to check:\\n - The identifier claim store / `headwater new` minting logic — decision doc docs/decisions/0054-the-upper-bound-of-a-reconcile-first-allocator-is-the-corpus-and-a-claim-store.md mentions scanning \\\"every remote branch for the highest identifier in use\\\" before minting, and `.headwater/ids/<scheme>/<identifier>` claim files (one file per claim, never overwritten). Find the Rust code (grep engine/ for \\\"reconcile\\\", \\\"claim\\\", \\\"highest\\\", \\\"scan\\\", \\\"mint\\\") that implements this and see if there's a comment about why the count isn't cached.\\n - The run ledger docs/process/decisions/0005-the-ledger-is-split-its-tabular-parts-are-jsonl-and-its-totals-are-derived.md — \\\"every total is derived and never stored\\\". Check if this is about a build-order ledger (per-run) rather than \\\"whole corpus\\\", or if it applies more broadly. Read this whole file.\\n - Any place computing document counts, word counts, taxonomy membership counts, or similar stats across all of docs/ for reporting (e.g. in headwater-product-owner agent, mkdocs build, or a CLI verb like `headwater explain`/`headwater check`).\\n2. Read docs/decisions/0054-the-upper-bound-of-a-reconcile-first-allocator-is-the-corpus-and-a-claim-store.md IN FULL and report its exact content, especially any language about counts, corpus, and why nothing is cached/committed.\\n3. Read docs/process/decisions/0005-the-ledger-is-split-its-tabular-parts-are-jsonl-and-its-totals-are-derived.md IN FULL and report its exact content.\\n4. grep the whole repo (engine/, docs/, .claude/, tools/) for the words \\\"corpus\\\" combined with \\\"count\\\", \\\"derive\\\", \\\"derived\\\", \\\"cache\\\", \\\"committed\\\", \\\"stale\\\" to find other candidates.\\n5. Check DEVELOPING.md for a section called \\\"What holds this repository\\\" and report what it says about derived values / counts / caching, and whether it mentions the identifier scheme or the ledger.\\n6. Look for a Rust module related to identifier minting/claims (search engine/ for files with \\\"id\\\" \\\"claim\\\" \\\"mint\\\" \\\"reconcile\\\" in the name or content) and report relevant function names, file paths, and any doc comments explaining WHY a value is computed fresh each time rather than stored.\\n\\nReport back: for each candidate, the exact file path(s), relevant excerpts (verbatim, with line numbers), and your assessment of which one best matches \\\"a count taken over the whole corpus is worked out when it is read rather than kept in a committed file\\\" with a decision/ruling it can point to.
